IMG_9196.JPG=Dave Brake, Immediate PP of Potomac Kiwanis Club was the New Club Building chair for the Division. A new one is in the works and should come to fruition this new year. Dave receives LG Mary Jackson’s thanks. IMG_9266.JPG=Last but not least of the “Happenings in September” in Division 17, the Bethesda Kiwanis Club held its major fund raiser. It’s the “37th Annual Bethesda Kiwanis Golf Classic” at the Bretton Woods Club in Germantown benefiting Suburban Hospital and its other charities. Club President and PLG Jim Leder begins the awards and silent auction dinner with a pitch on the Miracle League Baseball project. This is a very ambitious project needing equally ambitious fund raising. The M.L. is a special baseball field designed for physically and/or otherwise disabled children. It is the first such field in Maryland. An exhibition game was played also for the first time on August 28th at the Montgomery County Soccer Plex in Germantown. For more information on the project please go to the site www.miracleleaguemontcomd.com. IMG_9263.JPG=Lt. Gov. Joyce Sharon installed the Rockville Club team. Elected and installed at the Normandie Farms Restaurant in Potomac is President Stacey Miller. Congratulations, Stacey! Her family was there is see the proud moment. IMG_9273.JPG=Now for the REAL good golfers, there is the competition for the famous “Durfee Award”. This was named after PP John Durfee when on a particularly bad hole for him years ago … well he had a little tantrum and wrapped his iron around a tree. It can happen. He tried to throw the club away … but it was retrieved and mounted ceremoniously on a piece of masonite. It has been subsequently been awarded to the player with the highest score. That’s good, right?\ \ This year’s award winner at the dinner was Kiwanian Chris Vandermortel. His name will be memorialized in ink on masking tape, and he must display and care for the plaque until next year when he brings it back to defend his title. On the left is Past President Jeanne Smith and on the right golf tournament chairman and 2010-2011 club President Jim Leder. I have to admit I have won that prize in the past. Congratulations Chris! IMG_9283.JPG=In the wrap up three of the club’s past presidents met at the podium: Jim Leder, Jim Aylor and Bob Cressy. It was a fun day with good friends. P.S. That shirt of Bob’s is the new CapDist Official Golf Shirt … an attention getter. Of course you can still wear the older style you have, but the new one is real nice. IMG_9204.JPG=Now Immediate Past Lieutenant Governor Marv and his wife Kiwanian Liz Jackson, of Montgomery Village Kiwanis, finish a terrific year of leading Division 17. Thank you, from everyone! IMG_9259.JPG=One of best events to have to end the last year and start the new year off is to install a new member. Rockville did by inducting Scott Bressler, at the pleasure of LG Joyce Sharon as well. IMG_9188.JPG=An effective DCM format this now past year has been to allow each club president to present their club activity and program overviews for a few minutes before the full club representation of attendees. Also one club is featured each month to present a 15 minute overview of their club. In September President Aaron Ferrufino of the Kiwanis Club of Potomac presented its history, current projects and upcoming events for the new year. The club is starting its fifth year and helps support nine community service organization and has chartered TWO new Key Clubs, at Churchill and Bullis High Schools. A division calendar for the year helps coordinate all clubs’ major activity so clubs can support each other through inter-clubbing. IMG_9308.JPG=Potomac’s President for 2010-2011 is Nancy Cressy. She was installed by Division 17’s new Lieutenant Governor, Joyce Sharon, a member of the Wheaton-Silver Spring Club. Now Immediate Past President Aaron Ferrufino proudly receives his Past President Award for Outstanding Leadership of the Potomac, Maryland Club. IMG_9272.JPG=The first place team had a net score of 56. You're kidding me! Nope! Winners were Bart Mease, B. Copenhaver, and B. Crovella. A great day, a little hot and humid that day, but a great day none the less. Thanks for supporting the 65 year young Bethesda Kiwanis Club with its many community service projects. IMG_9310.JPG=Potomac Club Director Beth Bentolia presents President Nancy Cressy a bouquet of flowers in congratulations from the club membership. You have a great team, committed service projects and strong support of all members. Especially proud of Nancy is PG Bob Cressy. IMG_9190.JPG=LG Marv Jackson (2010-11) presented each club through its president a “Distinguished Service Award”. Marv congratulates Olney Kiwanis President Marty Eley their certificate. Nice recognition. IMG_9262.JPG=At the Rockville Kiwanis Club Installation of Officers and Directors dinner, LG Joyce Sharon presented the 2008-2009 Distinguished Club award to, of course, Distinguished President John Tyner. John is, of course, a Past Governor. IMG_9185.JPG=At the Division 17 Council Meeting for clubs in Montgomery County, Maryland, a very pleasant recognition by Kiwanis International of “Distinguished Club” status for 2008-2009 was presented to the Rockville Club and the Potomac Club by Immediate Past Governor Tom Masser. Left to right is Distinguished Rockville President John Tyner, a past governor, and Potomac Clubs’ Distinguished Club Secretary Nancy Cressy and Distinguished President Dave Drake. That’s team leadership very well done, Kiwanians! IMG_9301.JPG=The Kiwanis Club of Potomac began its fifth year with its Installation Dinner on Tuesday, September 28th. The festivities opened with 2009-2010 President Aaron Ferrufino leading the members and guests in the Pledge of Allegiance and his invocation. They now sponsor two Key Clubs … at Churchill High School in 2009 and the just chartered Bullis Key Club.
