Gov. Jeffrey's Message
by Gov. Jeffrey Wolff
With the onset of Spring, we turn our focus to changes in the Kiwanis world. Your Kiwanis clubs should already be planning your officer elections for the 2012-2013 administrative year. The elections are typically held in April but your nominating committee should be identifying members now who are interested in serving on your Board of Directors this year and also with an eye toward the following year's leadership as well.
Your Lt. Governor should have contacted your club recently about planning a Membership Drive in celebration of Kiwanis Membership Month in May. Starting your planning in March will ensure a successful event for your club and more new members to increase the service your club performs in its community.
This past month, I had the privilege of speaking at the 52nd Annual Capital District CKI Convention held at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City Hotel in Arlington, VA. I'm pleased to report that the event was a great success with high CKI attendance and participation from members of Key Club and Kiwanis as well. A new slate of District Officers were elected to lead the CKI Clubs of the Capital District starting April 1st. Heading up the new team as the 2012-2013 Governor is Mikail Clark, a senior at Liberty University who has already served two years on the District Board as a Lt. Governor and Secretary/Treasurer.
Coming up the first weekend in May, Capital District will serve as host to Kiwanis International President Alan Penn and First Lady Jeri from Medina, Ohio. There will be a service project held on Saturday, May 5th in Washington, DC open to all branches of the Kiwanis-Family. This will be followed up by a formal charity dinner Saturday night benefiting The Eliminate Project with President Alan as the Keynote Speaker. While he is visiting our District, President Alan and I will be visiting any Kiwanis club that is willing to pledge to be a Model Club for the Eliminate Project.
March 20th is the early registration deadline for our Kiwanis International Convention in New Orleans. I hope that many of you are planning to make a trip to The Crescent City and join us in June at the Renaissance Arts Hotel in the French Quarter. We will be there enjoying education, food, fellowship and supporting our candidate for International Vice President, Trustee Jerry Peuler from the Kiwanis Club of Waldorf, MD. Our District Dinner will be a $25/person meal at the New Orleans School of Cooking, where you will be able to learn how your traditional Louisiana meal is made as it is prepared for you.
Finally, I want to thank Dave Maloney for his hard work and dedication as our Bulletin Editor on the eBuilder. Starting next month, we will launch the first issue of our new bi-monthly magazine, The Capital Kiwanian with Greg Davy of the Williamsburg Club as the new Editor. If you have articles or suggestions for Greg, please email him at editor@capitaldistrictkiwanis.org.
In Kiwanis service,
Jeffrey M. Wolff
