Leisure World Club
by Stanford Crockett
Our Community Services Committee activity, collecting toiletries for local shelters, was a resounding success. A large selection was packed and delivered to five shelters for men, women and children in Montgomery County.
A project to celebrate International Kiwanis One Day Service Project for our community will take place when Leisure World completes plans for a garden in front of Club House 1. We will fund a bench for seating in that Park thus fulfilling the directive of comfort for residents visiting the garden. Kiwanis name will be on the bench.
The month of April is Nationally designated as 'Stroke Awareness Month.' As a service to our club members, your Community Service Committee will have a display of information concerning the identifying signs and quick response needed to successfully manage, overcome and prevent strokes.
On a visit to Stepping Stones Shelter for Women and Children, we ask about their needs which we might address. They replied, "We need a computer and printers." Your community Service Committee discussed this request and will begin informing the Club of this need, the reasons we need to respond and when we will begin an ingathering. The director says that these need not be new, but of course in working order. Many of us update our equipment from time to time. The reason for giving you a heads up is that if you are one who is out looking for a near system, we want you to remember this future project when you are looking for a place to give your present system. The shelter residents use computers for resume writing, homework and to learn computer skills. Phoebe Clark is our contact at the shelter. She will announce a time for the ingathering soon. Please save computers, lap tops and printers for Kiwanis.
