Poquoson Club Welcomes New Key Club Officers
by Joe Discenza
The Kiwanis Club of Poquoson welcomed new officers of the Poquoson High School Key Club at their weekly breakfast meeting. The Key Club is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club and aspires to the same ideals as Kiwanis. Key club members work together to help the local community and to raise funds for community causes. The Kiwanis Club of Poquoson has sponsored the PHS Key Club for many years, to introduce youth to the concept of helping those in need and performing community service. The club provides an opportunity for students to gain leadership experience by running for elected officer positions.
Last year, The PHS Key Club had 72 official members, earning nearly 900 hours of community service and raising over $3,000, in a variety of regional, local, and school projects such as March of Dimes, UNICEF, PHS After Prom, Treats for Troops, Polar Plunge, Relay for Life, the Red Cross Blood Drive, Adopt-A-Spot, Poquoson Seafood Festival, School-wide recycling programs, Garvey Soccer Tournament, and the annual MPS Walk/Run. The executive board also participated in the Kiwanis Mid-Winter Conference at ODU and in the District Leadership Training at Walshingham Acadamy. With the new school year upon us, The new slate of officers, led by President Danielle Tassara, are prepared to make 2009-2010 the best year ever.
