Rose Hill Museum. Kari Saavedra, museum manager at The Children's Museum of Rose Hill Manor Park in Frederick, was a recent guest of the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick where she explained the history of Rose Hill (retirement home of Maryland's first governor, Thomas Johnson) as well as the Museum's many and varied programs that teach "hands on history." Woodsboro Bank. The banking industry was the subject of a recent talk presented to the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick by Richard Miller, Pres. & CEO of Woodsboro Bank. Club members were interested to hear of the impact recent banking regulation changes are having on banks, both large and small. Jeremy Foundation Receives $300. The Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick recently awarded a $300 grant to The Jeremy Foundation, a non-profit organization having as its focus identifying and helping children with cancer whose families need financial assistance. Assistance is provided in the form of parent care packages consisting of gas cards, phone cards, parking vouchers and change for vending machines. Club Supports Frederick Community Action Agency. Todd Johnson, Assistant Director of the Frederick Community Action Agency, recently visited the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick to describe the many services provided by the Agency to assist families and individuals who are low-income or homeless. Services include providing food, shelter, medical care, housing, counseling and other forms of assistance. Pictured, left to right, club member Joe Vitanza presents a check for $500 to Todd Johnson.
Club Donates $1000 to Safe Kids Coalition. Through its Community Foundation of Frederick County Fund, the Kiwanis Club of Suburban Frederick recently donated $1000 to the Safe Kids Coalition of Frederick County. The mission of Safe Kids Frederick County is to prevent unintentional injuries to children ages 14 and under, in Frederick County, through a coordinated program of public awareness, education, legislative action, enforcement and access to low cost safety products. Programs include education related to general safety, carbon monoxide poisoning, child passenger seat safety, pedestrian safety, and bicycle safety. Youthful Offender Program. Mike Folio, Director of the Youthful Offender Program of the State's attorney's Office, recently explained to the club his role in running this unique program. A diversionary program for young people age 12 to 17, the Youthful Offender Program was developed by former State's Attorney Scott Rolle to educate troubled youths before they move on to committing serious crimes. Slavery in Frederick County. Jennifer Winter, Museum Operations Coordinator at the Historical Society of Frederick County, recently gave club members an overview of slavery in Frederick County during the mid-19th century. Tranquility Farm. Our club recently made a $300 donation to Tranquility Farm Equestrian Education and Renewal Center of Thurmont, MD. Carl Braun (Dir. of Marketing), Norman Gibat (Board Member), and Pres./Founder Sarah Transeau-Hayes visited our club recently to explain the benefits the riding of and interaction with horses has for those suffering from physical, mental or emotional injuries.
