La Plata High School Key Club Celebrates its Independence at the Town Hall
by Chelsea Stahl, LPHS Key Club President
On Saturday July 4th members of the La Plata High School Key Club celebrated America's independence at their Town Hall. The La Plata Town Hall has instated many new activities that they hope will become traditions within the town for years to come. This year to celebrate the Fourth they had an outdoor activities day which included a band and at least one hundred watermelons!
The Key Clubbers who attended the event did various things with the watermelons that the Town Hall provided! They helped children 5 years old and younger with a "watermelon roll" where the children rolled watermelons almost their size from spot to spot. They served slices of watermelons to people there next to the wonderful jazz band. Finally, they helped groups of people with the watermelon toss, where two people threw large watermelons back and forth.
The event was open to everyone, and tons of families came to enjoy the music, fruit and moon bounces for their children. Even the Mayor and several other political figures attended the event. The Key Club received a donation from the Town Hall that will go towards Ronald McDonald House Charities, the Capital District Governor's project. The La Plata High School Key Club plans to continue helping the Town Hall, in hopes that the entire town will begin to feel a strong sense of community.
