Rehoboth Kiwanis Hosts 2010 Key Club Winter Rally
by Rosemary Cummings
The temperature was 23 degrees, the winds were howling and snow covered the lawn and path, but inside the Kent Street Kiwanis House, the Key Club Winter Rally of 2010 was in progress as more than 60 Key Club members from Delaware and Maryland gathered. Members started arriving shortly before 10 AM from as far away as Newark, DE, with delegates driving from Milford, Cape Henlopen, Indian River, Delmar, Bennett and The Salisbury high schools and continued until 11 AM when the Rally officially started After introductions and ice breakers, there was pizza and salad for lunch, and then election for Lt. Governor as Div 11A re-elected Michelle Haney from Sussex Tech HS and Div 15 re-elected Rachel Slotter from Stephen DeCatur HS. The real focus of the day was the strawberry and grape peanut butter and jelly competition as Key Club members, Advisors, and Kiwanians formed assembly lines and made over 1000 P&J sandwiches. It is Official: the Grape Team is the 2010 Champ. In addition, the Key Clubs brought canned goods for the local food pantry and over 80 pounds of pop tabs they collected the past few months as a fundraiser. The next week, Zone Administrator Millie Edgar delivered the tabs to the Ronald McDonald House in Wilmington, DE. CKI Lt Gov Sarah Smith visiting from UD lent a hand during P&J assembly time and District Key Club Gov. Samah McGona cheered on the Key clubbers. Everyone agreed they had an awesome time, even Administrator Joe Stankus wearing his summer uniform and winter Santa Claus beard who ran errands for extra bread and jelly. See photo album.
