Mount Vernon Club Honors MLK
by Bruce Malkin
The Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club (MVKC) participated on Monday morning, January 18, in the program organized by the Sacramento Neighborhood Center to commemorate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. The program was varied and at times highly inspirational. Mrs. L.T. carson was the emcee, and there were six presenters, including MVKC President Bruce Malkin and others from the Coast Guard, Mount Vernon Police station, UCM, and the Census Bureau. The raffles were well liked by the children as well as by the adults. MVKC donated two gift certificates to Wal-Mart as prizes. The brunch afterwards was delicious, and included free Starbucks coffee donated by the MVKC thanks to the generous assistance of the managers at Starbucks in Mount Vernon Plaza and Beacon Mall. The highlights, though, were the inspirational reading (above) of Dr. King's "I Have A Dream" speech delivered by Dr. King in Washington DC some 40 years ago and read this day by L.T. Carson, and the finale of everyone rising and linking hands to sing together "We Shall Overcome".
