Ivan
D. Neal Joins Georgetown Kiwanis
by Rosemary Cummings
Georgetown Kiwanis Club is proud to welcome its newest member, Ivan D. Neal, the Administrator of Community Programs at Indian River School District. His job includes community outreach and three District-wide Portfolios: Adult Education, Student Mentoring, and Project V.I.L.L.A.G.E. that helps prepare lagging pre-schoolers for Kindergarten.
A Georgetown native, Ivan is a former Key-Clubber at Sussex Central where he was also on Student Council and attended Boys'State. As a student, he also had Past President Rich Comly, for High School Mathematics and knew former members George Reddish (Social Studies) and Frank Hewitt (History). Mr. Neal returned to the Indian River School District after earning a B.S. in Education from the University of Delaware in 1983 and has remained in his home area. After a year teaching Special Education at Phillip C. Showell Elementary School in Selbyville, he became a Fourth Grade classroom teacher at Frankford Elementary where he served from 1984 to 1998, emulating his career inspiration, Mrs. Beatrice Hendricks, his Fourth Grade teacher at the old Georgetown Elementary School. In 1994, he received a Masters Degree in Educational Administration from Salisbury University.
Ivan was appointed Assistant Principal of Selbyville Middle School in 1997 and became its Principal in 1999. In ’01, the Board appointed him the Principal of Phillip C. Showell where he served until ’07 when he accepted his current position. One of the more pleasant fringe benefits of his attending area educational functions was the introduction to his wife Sabrina, a native of Fenwick Island and a teacher at Sussex Technical High School. They have been married six years and have a son, Ivan Jr., three years old.
Sponsored by Shirley Dennis and Holland vanValkenburgh, the Neal’s are welcome additions the Georgetown Kiwanis Club family. The Club will now have at least one "in" in the educational Establishment.
