The "K-Family Weekend" Brings Together the Key Club & CKI Boards with Kiwanis Leadership Team
a Photo Essay by Immediate Past Governor Bob Cressy

Have you ever been on a "K-Family Weekend"? You'd never forget it, I'll tell you. Just what is a K-Family weekend anyway? Well, its definition is really the Kiwanis Family Weekend. Its purpose is to gather the current Key Club Board, the CKI Board and the new Kiwanis leadership team, especially all of the 2008-2009 Lieutenant Governors, SLP advisors and K-Family Governors. They assemble for most of three days to work and play together, to share ideas, plans and to get to know one another while coordinating their goals. more or view event photo album

Kiwanis Club Of Shady Side Scholarship Presentation
Jane Eylward

The Kiwanis Club of Shady Side recently held a Scholarship and Grant Presentation at the Kiwanis Community Center in Shady Side. Mrs. Short, Principal of Shady Side Elementary School, was awarded a check in the amount of $1700 for the purchase of a document camera and projector for the school. Jalen Matthews, an honor student at Southern Middle School was awarded $1000 toward his participation in the People to People pro gram. Jalen will act as a student ambassador in Australia for a two week cultural exchange. Tom Bolander, Den Leader of Cub Scout Troop 853 and his son, Cub Scout Matt received $135 to help defray costsof books and uniforms for members. Not in attendance but also awarded checks: Mrs. Brown, Principal of Deale Elementary School received $500 toward that schools playground fund raising efforts. Shannon Crowder, an honor student at Southern High School received $500 towards college tuition. Jay Creech of Venture Crew 867 received a check for $500 to help fund this organization, newly established in South County, and $100 was donated to the Southern High School Prom Breakfast Fund Raiser.

The Kiwanis Club of Shady Side is comprised of 23 hard working volunteers who raise money throughout the year by hosting Shrimp Feasts, Turkey Shoots, Christmas Tree sales and through community hall and sign rentals. The club is the host and organizer of the annual Shady Side July 4th Parade and uses that venue to raise the bulk of the funds that are donated back to the community through these grants and scholarships. The club also sponsors Blood Drives with The American Red Cross, and hunting and safety courses through Anne Arundel County.

According to Sharon Sudduth, Club Secretary, they are adding even more annual fund raising events including an upcoming old fashioned Halloween Costume Party. "We realize the current economic situation will bring some challenges in our fund raising efforts, said Ms. Sudduth, but the people of South Anne Arundel County have always been generous and supportive of our efforts to help the youth of South County through cultural and educational opportunities."
