Kiwanis Club Hampton Educators Night
by Al Newton
The Kiwanis Club of Hampton honored the Hampton Schools that they have supported, in some cases, for over sixty years in a program entitled " Educators Night". The elementary school association began in 1991 at the John Tyler Elementary School with reading and mentoring assistance. It presently includes programs at five elementary schools; Barron, Booker, Phillips, Smith and Tyler elementary schools and Hampton High School where its Key Club was chartered in 1949. Support which varies with the schools includes Kiwanis programs such as Reading and Gifting ( students take home book that they selected after it has been read to the class); Bringing Up Grades(BUGS);Terrific Kids ( students establish goals and are rewarded if the goals are attained); K-kids ( elementary level Kiwanis club) and the High School Key Club.
The principals or their representative were presented with a certificate recognizing and thanking them for their support in allowing the Kiwanis Club of Hampton " to contribute to the development of student knowledge, personal development, leadership skills and civic awareness" .
Fred Brewer, Chairman Hampton School Board, opened the program expressing appreciation to the club for honoring these partnerships and its ongoing support.
