News Update from The Kiwanis Club of Far East Washington
by Bernice Oden
Far East Kiwanis likes to teach the children valuable team building skills that are formed through participation in schools, churches, and civic activities: where new friendships are cultivated & developed with others throughout the region. Far East partners with #14 Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington, Benning Road NE and National Congress of Black Women, (NCBW), Washington, DC, with the aim of jointly addressing challenges. This is based on the conviction that solutions which are jointly reached on a basis of partnership will benefit all concerned.
To achieve enduring progress, Far East and our partners focus on helping people and children help themselves. More importantly, reassessment and an open dialogue will lead to a long term viable solution for the community, the children and society as a whole, with the assistance of our volunteer members.
The Far East Club has participated in NCBW's College for Kids Program geared to 9-12 year olds, held at Howard University from January 2009 through March 2009. Other activities included Easter egg hunt, kite flying, science fairs," Read Around the World Projects"- where we partnered with #14 Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington.
The Far East Club also advocates a survival and development program -where safety is emphasized and we will partner with Metropolitan Police Department- and we will work with Officer Friendly.
The Far East Club will be closing out a Pre-Kindergarten program with a picnic for 30 kids and four adults. In addition, they will receive a book of their choice.
