Kiwanis Club of Smithfield Holds Biggest Fundraiser of the Year
by Karen Foster
On the morning of May 7, 2009 the weather didn't look too promising for the Towne Bank/Kiwanis Club of Smithfield Annual Golf Tournament, the club's single biggest fundraiser of the year. What no one knew was that, not only had the tournament committee organized the golf, the food, the sponsors and the prizes, but they also organized the weather. It turned out to be a beautiful day and much fun was had by all.
Along with weather challenges, we also had food challenges this year. Because the tournament was on the same day as the Prayer Breakfast, many of the members who normally begin cooking early in the morning were otherwise occupied. Clearly, the praying helped-as usual, Carter Williams, Charlie White and their crew pulled it all together beautifully!!
And, not only did everyone have fun, but the club raised funds for all of the programs serving the children of Isle of Wight county in Virginia as well. Knowing that the golf tournament is the club's biggest fundraiser of the year, the committee worked tirelessly to raise a whopping $6700 as of press time. John Graham, committee chairperson, commented that he is expecting some additional receipts and is hoping to top out at $7,000. Committee members were: John Graham, Scott Lauder, Renee Bevan, Andrew Gregory, Amy Musick, Bob Cole, and Kristin Wilda
This year's tournament sponsor was Towne Bank. For a complete list of sponsors and pictures, go to SmithfieldKiwanis.org.
