Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club Collects Record Amount of Food for UCM's Food Pantry at Hollin Hall Safeway
by Bruce Malkin
On May 16, the Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club (MVKC) held one of its five annual Food drives outside the Hollin Hall Safeway on Fort Hunt Road. MVKC Food Drive Coordinator, Perry Leonard, led off the morning on a 9-11 shift with Barbara Callahan. Rich Keil and Fred Harbin took the 11-1 shift, followed by Kahan Dhillon and Jim Todd. Erin Rhoads and her husband, Nathan, finished with the 3-5 shift. UCM weighed the 40 banana boxes full of food and found we had received 1,765 pounds, a one-day high for the MVKC members. Special help was given by 4 of the Boy Scouts from our sponsored Troop 1851, who worked alongside MVKC members to solicit contributions. In addition to the food itself, the Club received $267 from generous Safeway patrons in cash and check, which was also given to UCM to buy more food to be given to the many families in need in our area. Our next Food Drive is scheduled for July 25.
