Petersburg Club Donates to Children

The
Petersburg Kiwanis Breakfast Club donates
to projects and causes for children in Petersburg.
During 2008 the club cosponsored the annual
shrimp feast in the spring in conjunction
with the Petersburg Lunch Club. The fest
was held at the community junior college.
In the spring and again in the fall, the
club conducted a yard sale. Monies raised
from these efforts are being distributed
on a case by case basis to youth project
leaders to help defray expenses for children
under age 18. According to the 2000 census
27.6 % of Petersburg's 13,799 households
have children under the age of 18. The donations
made by the club are needed to make a difference
and are appreciated by the community as the
median household income in Petersburg was
reported by the same census as $28,851. The
club is holding a special meeting this month
to plan the 2009 fundraisers. Pictured, at a recent

presented a $250 donation to Pathways, a
nonprofit community development corporation
serving at risk youth by helping them obtain a GED and by teaching them valuable life skills.
At a January meeting members voted to donate $350 to the Tri-City Annual Summer Youth Work Camp scheduled for July. The Fort Lee Youth Bowling League received a donation to help made a difference for youth who could otherwise not participate. The Breakfast club is also the sponsor of the Key Club at Petersburg High School where money was provided to several projects including the purchase of club shirts for Key Club members and sponsored the Key club float in the Petersburg High School Home Coming Parade.
The Petersburg Breakfast Club focuses on bringing that positive change to the children of Petersburg one project at a time. Our children in Petersburg are our future and they need our help. If we don't help them, who will? The 18 members meet for breakfast and business every Wednesday from 7:15 to 8:30 am at the Liason Restaurant on North Crater Road in Petersburg.
